CHESTER, S.C. – Chester police officers have found a way to get 60 miles to the gallon and meet more people face to face out on patrol. This week, they’re driving around town in a golf cart. It’s a test run, but Chief Mike Brown said he hopes it’ll make a big difference in law enforcement there.

When filling up his Ford F-150 pickup and Ford Explorer got too expensive two years ago, John Auld of Grosse Point Park began searching for a new way to get around town. He found it last winter in a seven-year-olf golf cart he bought from a local course.

There are very few car thefts in Peachtree City, Ga. There are, however, more than a few cart thefts. This planned town 25 miles south of Atlanta has 90 miles of golf-cart paths and 9,000 registered carts, one for every four of its 36,000 residents.
